Annie Lander ist Polizeireporterin bei der größten Zeitung Stockholms und bekannt für die Hartnäckigkeit, mit der sie nach der Wahrheit sucht. Ihre Recherchen über eine unaufgeklärte Mordserie an Prostituierten führen sie in gesellschaftliche Kreise, in denen sogar die Polizei gekauft werden kann. Auch ihr Arbeitgeber ist Teil des Korruptionsgeflechts und so wird Annie suspendiert und verschwindet kurz darauf spurlos. Als die Polizei zu Unrecht ihren Mann Max verdächtigt, Annie umgebracht zu haben, beginnt dieser, selbst nach ihr zu suchen. Unverhofft bekommt er dabei Unterstützung von der Balkan-Mafia.
