Holmes und Watson waren zwar jetzt im Besitz eines Zettels, der die Vornamen der nächsten beiden Opfer preisgab. Doch wie sollten sie Inspektor Wolfford erklären, woher sie die Liste hatten? Zumal der Erhalt dieser Liste jegliche Logik von vorne herein ausschloss. Außerdem stellte sich noch die Frage, wer hinter dem dritten und letzten Opfer stecken sollte, da dieses nur mit einem Fragezeichen versehen war. Als Holmes und Watson schließlich auf das dritte Opfer, den Pfarrer Blake Bancroft, stießen, beschlich Holmes eine böse Vermutung, wer sich hinter dem letzten Opfer verbergen konnte. Und diese Vermutung versetzte Watson in pure Angst...
