Tijdens de Gentse Feesten, het grote stadsfestival van de Vlaamse stad, gaat alle aandacht naar het Jim Rose Circus. Dit Amerikaanse gezelschap bestaat uitsluitend uit freaks, die gevaarlijke stunts uithalen. Maar het is niet de bedoeling dat de artiesten ledematen verliezen. Als een afgehakte mannenhand gevonden wordt, is niemand minder dan detective Pat Somers de hoofdverdachte. En het ergste: onze held weet zelf niet of hij onschuldig is. Hij lijdt aan vreemde black-outs.
