Das Stempfield-Hotel liegt an einem Berghang im Schatten bewaldeter Gipfel. Lange stand das riesige Anwesen leer, jetzt hat es zwei neue Besitzer – Charles Stempfield und Helen Miller. So bietet sich Lady Bedfort und ihrem Butler Max die Gelegenheit, bereits vor der Neueröffnung einige Tage in der malerischen Umgebung auszuspannen. Als Max jedoch eine äußerst seltsame Beobachtung macht, stellt sich die Frage, ob das alte Hotel wirklich so verlassen ist, wie es anfangs schien.
