Der Fortschritt ist nicht mehr aufzuhalten. Automobile, Telefon, Untergrundbahn - moderne Zeiten. Diese nagen im Jahr 1909 an den Nerven des großen Detektivs. Der letzte Fall liegt Wochen zurück. Holmes leidet. Da kommt der seltsame Patient, der sich in Dr. Watsons Praxis vorstellt, gerade recht. Eine dem Doktor vollends unbekannte Krankheit droht ihn umzubringen. Der Mediziner ist ratlos und bittet seinen Freund um Hilfe. Dem ist sofort klar: Jemand will Mr. Jones vergiften!
