Michael Kohlhaas, einem Pferdehändler im 16. Jahrhundert, werden zwei Pferde gestohlen. Unabdingbar nimmt er seinen Kampf um Recht und Gerechtigkeit auf. Es geht ihm dabei nicht nur um den Diebstahl, sondern um die Gerechtigkeit als solche. Die Handlung wurde 1808-10 verfasst und spielt in Brandenburg und Sachsen.
