The author himself later added the story to his list of '12 Favorite Sherlock Holmes Stories'. Watson rents a house in the town of Reigate in Surrey so that Holmes, exhausted by the previous investigation, can rest in a rural idyll. A burglary takes place in one of the neighboring houses, during which unrelated and not at all valuable things were stolen. William Kiruon, the coachman, was also killed, and a piece of a note was found in his hand. From a fragment of the note, the detective concludes that it was written by two related men, however, one of them is younger, the other is older.
