Alfie ist ein armer Junge mit richtig schlechten Zähnen. Da sein Vater kaum für sich selbst sorgen kann, kümmert sich niemand darum, Alfie regelmäßig zum Zahnarzt zu schicken. Doch dann bekommt Alfie Unterstützung von der tatkräftigen Sozialarbeiterin Winnie, die ihn sofort zum Zahnarzt schickt. Ausgerechnet zu der neuen, unheimlichen Zahnärztin Miss Wurzel. Seit sie da ist, verschwinden ausgefallene Milchzähne, die die Kinder für die Zahnfee unters Kopfkissen legen, und am nächsten Morgen findet man dort Käfer, Asseln und Fußnägel. Als Miss Wurzel Alfie dann auch noch alle Zähne zieht, wittert der Junge, dass etwas nicht stimmt ...
