Joseph Ward und William Cooper, zwei erst vor wenigen Tagen entlassene Häftlinge, werden tot in einem geöffneten Grab auf dem Friedhof aufgefunden. Inspektor Wolfford bittet Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson um Hilfe.
