Richard Burton wird bei Holmes und Watson vorstellig. Er berichtet von seinem Geschäftspartner Timothy Miller, der ein kleines Vermögen aus der Geschäftskasse entwendet hat und seitdem nicht mehr aufgetaucht ist. Mr. Burton macht sich große Sorgen, da dieses Verhalten so gar nicht zu seinem Partner passt. Sherlock Holmes verspricht Aufklärung. Einige Tage später kommt Holmes überraschend in die Praxis von Dr. Watson und bittet diesen eine Anzeige für die Zeitung zu schreiben. In dem Inserat soll stehen, dass Watson auf der Suche nach der ganz großen Liebe ist und sich über zahlreiche Zuschriften sehr freuen würde. Was Watsons Ehefrau Mary wohl dazu sagen wird und ob dies wirklich dem Auffinden von Timothy Miller dient?
