De verhalen van Henk en Wim Gemert in de periode voor, tijdens en na de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Henk groeit op in Mokum en gaat al op jonge leeftijd varen bij de koopvaardij. Wim woont van zijn negende tot zijn zestiende in Frederiksoord bij zijn moeder. Als Henk op zee is, voltrekt zich thuis een tragedie. Wim keert terug naar Amsterdam, waar hij aanmonstert bij de marine. Zijn dromen achterna, terwijl die van Henk in duigen vallen.
