England 1884: An der Küste Cornwalls gibt es Höhlen, in denen sich ein Schlund im Boden auftut, der mit dem Meer verbunden ist. Die drei Freunde Sarah, Abel und Eric lieben es, zu einer dieser Höhlen, zum sogenannten Teufelsloch, zu gehen und dort zu lauschen, wenn in der Tiefe die Flut zu gurgeln beginnt.
