Es ist ein idyllischer Sommerabend in Cambridge, Massachusetts, an dem Dr. Kay Scarpetta zu einer Radfahrerin in einem Park gerufen wird. Die Leiche ist starr, doch die junge Frau kann noch nicht lange tot sein. Teile der Kleidung sind ihr vom Körper gerissen, doch nicht von Menschenhand. Die goldene Totenkopfkette der jungen Frau hat sich in die Haut eingebrannt. Alles deutet auf einen Blitzschlag hin, doch es gab kein Gewitter. Noch ahnt Scarpetta nicht, dass diese Leiche auch mit ihr zu tun hat. Dass sie eine tödliche Nachricht von einem Menschen ist, der von Hass zerfressen ist.
