Therese Fabiani geht als junge Frau nach Wien, wo sie sich zunächst als Gouvernante, dann als Privatlehrerin durchzuschlagen hofft. Der Eintönigkeit ihres Lebens versucht sie durch ständig wechselnde Liebschaften zu entkommen. Zu ihrem Sohn Franz, der Frucht einer ihrer Affären, hat sie ein distanziertes Verhältnis. Als sie durch eine Erbschaft zu etwas Geld kommt und Franz einen Betrag einfordert, kommt es zur Katastrophe.
