Siegfried, der junge Held, hat sein größtes Ziel noch nicht erreicht. Noch immer hat König Gunther sein Versprechen nicht erfüllt und ihm seine Schwester Kriemhild zur Frau gegeben. Der schwache König weiß nicht, wie er seiner stolzen Gattin Brünhild erklären soll, daß Kriemhild durch die Hochzeit mit Siegfried ihr ebenbürtig wird. Der Keim einer unheilvollen Feindschaft ist gesät.
