Mecklenburg, 1842: Der Traum von einem besseren Leben lässt Idas Familie die Auswanderung nach Neuseeland wagen. Auch Karl, der seit Langem für Ida schwärmt, will sein Glück dort machen. Doch als das Schiff St. Pauli endlich die Südinsel erreicht, erwartet die Siedler eine böse Überraschung. Das zugesagte Land steht nicht zur Verfügung...
