In einem vornehmen Stadthaus in Kensington wird Mrs. Moran tot in ihrer mit Wasser gefüllten Badewanne aufgefunden. Sie ist vollständig bekleidet, neben ihr schwimmt ein goldenes Kinderarmband. Die Londoner Polizei geht von Selbstmord aus, schließlich war Mrs. Moran sogar in ärztlicher Behandlung, weil sie so sehr unter ihrer Kinderlosigkeit litt. Doch ihre Schwester glaubt nicht an einen Selbstmord und bittet Sherlock Holmes, den Fall zu übernehmen. Während Dr. Watson einen Selbstmord für wahrscheinlich hält, beginnt Sherlock Holmes damit, sich mit dem Eheleben der Morans zu beschäftigen. Und tatsächlich scheint Clifton Moran etwas geheim zu halten ...
